Actinidia chinensisKiwi Fruit
Native to China, the "Chinese Gooseberry" was brought to New Zealand and first cultivated in the 1930s, where it became known as the Kiwi fruit. Though it is not related to the gooseberry, the Kiwi is a berry and produced on a woody, deciduous vine. Whilst the female plants bear fruit, male plants are needed as a source of pollen in order for the females to produce. Exceptionally rich in vitamin C, the Kiwi's remarkably long ripening period (2 months) enables the fruit to store for long periods of time. The Kiwi has boomed in popularity in the US, from an obscure and expensive novelty fruit to a not uncommon item of the American diet within the last 10 or 15 years. It is more subtropical than tropical in adaptation, and is able to tolerate light winter frost during the dormant period.

Asimina trilobaPawpaw

Originating from the Southeast U.S., Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is the only temperate (cool-climate) member of a tropical family that includes such delicious fruits as chirimoya, sweetsop and soursop. The fruit is the largest edible fruit native to America, from 3" to 6" long and resembling a short, fat banana or mango. It is very sweet and tastes like bananas with a hint of pineapple and mango. Whereas the flowers are perfect (i.e., each flower is both male and female), two or more plants are needed for fruit production as pollen must come from a second plant to be effective. Asimina triloba is usually 8 to 10 feet tall, and will sucker, forming loose colonies. However, if grown in the open, in a sunny location, the tree will develop a single trunk, often reaching 25 feet -- fruit production is also better. Its small size and attractive cone shape make it suitable for residential landscaping. Fall color, which is usually a soft, butter-yellow, can be outstanding. The tree is virtually disease and pest-free.

Carya illinoinensisPecan

ATrue American Nut One of the USA's important agricultural products, pecans are the only major tree nut that can be considered a true American nut. Pecans were first discovered growing in North America and parts of Mexico in the 1600s and were given the name "pecan" based on the Native American word of Algonquin origin, meaning "all nuts requiring a stone to crack." Pecans were favored by pre-colonial residents and served as a major source of food because they were accessible to waterways and easier to shell than other North American nut species. Today, pecans are grown in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas and are enjoyed around the world as the perfect nut. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics, over 346 million pounds of pecans were produced in the U.S. in 1999. In fact, the majority of the world's pecan production, 80 percent, comes from the U.S.

Caryota obtusaGiant Fishtail Palm

Giant Fish Tail Palm Caryota obtusa is by far the most massive of the fishtail palms. It is found scattered over a vast area between northeast India and northern Thailand, always growing in the mountains. The form from N-Thailand, which has recently been described as C. gigas, has been introduced into cultivation many years back. The true form from the NE-Indian States of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh however, where William Griffith collected the type specimen for his description of the species in 'Palms of British East India' (1850), has never made it into cultivation. As such we are very pleased to be able to offer this form to you now for the very first time ever. This awesome and majestic fishtail palm has a thick trunk (to 2 or 3 ft in diameter) and huge, flatly held leaves in the manner of a giant tree fern, which it resembles. The seeds germinate quickly, and subsequent growth is extremely fast, up to 3ft per year once established. The Indian form grows in the Himalayan foothills at altitudes of up to about 3300ft, and much further north than the Thai form (C. gigas). While the two are not really differing in looks, the Indian form will likely grow in even cooler conditions, and tolerate even a few more degrees of frost. Grow it where its great size can best be appreciated, and give it plenty of water and fertilizer.
